GS1 Digital Link for enterprise connected products

GS1 Digital Link provides a standards-based way to express GS1 identifiers in web addresses so a product identity can connect to digital information and services.

What GS1 Digital Link changes

Traditional product barcodes primarily identify an item at a point of sale or inside a business process. GS1 Digital Link extends that identity into a web-compatible format so the same identifier can participate in digital experiences and machine-to-machine interactions.

The code is only the carrier. The durable value is the product identity, the resolver behavior behind it, and the trusted information sources to which that identity connects.

Separate the identifier, URI, and data carrier

A GS1 identifier, a GS1 Digital Link URI, and the barcode or other data carrier are related but distinct. The identifier represents the product or other entity. The URI expresses that identifier in a web-compatible form. A QR Code, Data Matrix, GS1 DataMatrix, NFC tag, RFID tag, or application can carry or construct the identifier depending on the use case and sector.

Keeping these concepts separate helps companies avoid encoding temporary campaign URLs as if they were permanent product identities. The identity should remain stable while the resources, experiences, and APIs associated with it can evolve.

The role of a product identity resolver

A resolver receives a product-identity URL and determines which resource should be returned. That resource may differ by link type, language, geography, user role, lifecycle stage, device, channel, or business rule.

  • A consumer may receive usage, care, authenticity, or recycling information.
  • A retailer may receive product master data or regulatory disclosures.
  • A technician may receive service documentation and parts information.
  • A regulator may receive traceability or compliance information.
  • An application may discover machine-readable API resources.

Resolver design principles

GS1 Digital Link and a resolver are not the same thing. The standard defines how GS1 identifiers can be expressed on the web and how resolver behavior can work. A resolver is one service that implements that behavior and makes it practical to associate an identity with multiple related resources.

  • Use a durable domain: the organization should understand who controls the product URI and how continuity is preserved.
  • Preserve identifiers: destinations may change, but printed and encoded product identities should remain stable.
  • Support typed resources: applications should be able to discover product information, instructions, traceability, recalls, certifications, and APIs by purpose.
  • Provide a safe default: a general product experience should exist when no more specific rule or link type is requested.
  • Design for availability: identifiers printed on physical products may need to work for years, across vendor and organizational changes.

Enterprise implementation considerations

A production implementation must do more than create valid URLs. It must map identifiers to enterprise records, govern which data is exposed, support high availability, preserve auditability, and allow product experiences to change without replacing printed identifiers.

OriginSpan supports customer authorized GTIN validation and normalization, Digital Link style addresses, QR delivery, HTML, JSON-LD, linkset responses, conditional HTTP behavior, and localized public passport resources. Standards conformance claims are communicated after the applicable validation is complete.

A practical adoption roadmap

  1. Inventory GTINs, packaging levels, batches, lots, and serialized identities.
  2. Define the authoritative source for each product-data attribute.
  3. Select the first user journeys and machine-readable resources.
  4. Establish domain, URI, resolver, security, and governance patterns.
  5. Pilot with a measurable product family before scaling globally.
